An Amazingly Talented Group of People Here! Photo property of dirkmaggs.dswilliams.co.uk

Greetings Readers!

Today I am sharing a happy link to what I consider one of the greatest hidden gems of the internet. In 1932-3, Groucho and Chico Marx recorded a radio series entitled Flywheel, Shyster, & Flywheel, sadly the original tapes and scripts were believed lost for almost sixty years. In the late 1980s, twenty-five of the scripts re-surfaced in a copyright office and were published by Michael Barson in the book, Flywheel, Shyster, & Flywheel The Marx Brothers’ Lost Radio Show.

Sadly, the original series was broadcast live, recorded but not preserved. There is a silver lining to this story: from 1990-1992, the BBC adapted and recorded the radio series Flywheel, Shyster, & Flywheel. Actors Frank Lazarus (Chico Marx) and Michael Roberts (Groucho Marx) reprise their roles from the Broadway classic A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. A treat for British Radio audiences, is archived on the internet and can now be streamed, downloaded, and enjoyed by the rest of the world.

Both actors are excellent and are joined a superb ensemble that take on a variety of characters! Lazarus, does a spot-on Chico, and for those of you that don’t recognize the name, he composed the music for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine!
